The most recent guidelines from the scientific community and the international organizations for the protection of Cultural Heritage are encouraging to promote, protect and preserve in situ, where possible, the underwater archaeological and historical Heritage. This new orientation encounters a major difficulty in terms of practical application, related to the lack of knowledge and, most of all, of techniques and materials that are especially suitable for underwater preservation.
